O PODER DA FICÇÃO NA SOCIEDADE | THE POWER OF FICTION IN SOCIETY | CLAUDIA FEITOSA-SANTANA

This video is a free summary of the section about fiction in the book “Sapiens” written by Yuval Noah Harari, together with concepts developed by myself about perception. Summary: Our senses are limited and our reality is always relative. If reality is relative, it is always a point of view. When the view is shared by all of us, we are usually talking about an objective reality. For example: water, forests, and whales. When the view is hardly shared by all, we are usually talking about a subjective reality also known as fiction. When a subjective reality is shared by almost everyone, it looks like an objective one. Two examples: God and money. The more people believe in a subjective reality, the less it looks like fiction. Fictions are extremely necessary for the organization of our society and no other animal on the planet has the imagination that we have:
It is difficult to respect the rights of others. We created the Law.
Life does not always seem to have sense. We created God.
It's hard to love your neighbor as yourself. We created the religion.
Is life too short? We created the Eternal Life and Reincarnation.
It's hard to have just one partner. We created the Marriage.
Shared fictions facilitate cooperation. Two evangelicals that don’t know each other can attend a protest against abortion or gay marriage. Two Americans who don’t know one another can go to war as brothers on behalf of their nation. Two employees of the same corporation are able to work on a project together for months and end it without knowing anything about the personal life of each other. Objective realities are an exhaustible resource. Subjective realities are an inexhaustible source of fictions. Subjective realities are much more powerful than the objective and even the survival of the water, forests, and whales, depends on the grace bestowed by the gods, states and corporations.

Resumo: Quando o ponto de vista é compartilhado por todos nós, geralmente estamos falando de uma realidade objetiva como: água, floresta, baleia. Quando o ponto de vista é dificilmente compartilhado por todos, geralmente estamos falando de uma realidade subjetiva também conhecida como ficção. Quando uma realidade subjetiva é compartilhada por quase todo mundo, ela se parece com uma realidade objetiva. Dois exemplos: Deus e dinheiro, ficções aceitas pela maioria. Quanto mais gente acreditar numa realidade subjetiva, menos ela se parece com uma ficção. As ficções são extremamente necessárias para nossa organização em sociedade e nenhum outro animal no planeta tem a imaginação que nós temos:
É difícil respeitar o direito alheio? Criamos a Lei.
A vida nem sempre parece ter sentido? Criamos Deus.
É difícil amar ao próximo como a si mesmo? Criamos a Religião.
A vida é muito curta? Criamos a Vida Eterna e a Reencarnação.
É difícil ter apenas um parceiro? Criamos o Casamento.
As ficções partilhadas facilitam a cooperação. Dois evangélicos que não se conhecem podem juntos protestar contra o aborto e o casamento gay. Dois norte-americanos que nunca se viram vão para a guerra como irmãos em nome de sua nação. Dois funcionários de uma mesma corporação que não se conhecem são capazes de trabalhar num projeto juntos por meses e terminarem sem conhecer nada da vida pessoal um do outro. Realidade objetivas, fonte esgotável. Realidades subjetivas, fonte inesgotável de ficções. Nossas realidades subjetivas são muito mais poderosas que as objetivas e até mesmo a sobrevivência da agua das florestas e das baleias depende da graça concedida por deuses, estados e corporações.
