LA UNION, COLOMBIA — An aircraft carrying a Brazilian soccer team crashed on its approach to Medellin, Colombia late on Monday night.

At least 22 players from the Chapecoense soccer club were among the 72 passengers and nine crew members aboard the chartered flight, BBC News reported.

Eight Chapecoense executives, three club guests and 21 journalists were also aboard the flight, the Guardian reported, citing Colombia’s Caracol Radio.

The team was on its way to Colombia to play in the first leg of the Copa Sudamericana final against Medellin-based Atletico Nacional.

The plane, which had traveled from Santa Cruz, Bolivia, veered off course, Reuters quoted a Colombian rescue official as saying, before crashing into a hillside.

Survivors were being treated at the accident site, according to local reports. However, poor weather conditions are hampering access to the scene of the crash near the town of La Union.
