A study conducted in Denmark has linked the use of birth control pills to depression.
Researchers with the University of Copenhagen studied data collected over the course of roughly 13 years.
The more than 1 million subjects tracked were Danish women between the ages of 15 and 34.
Analysis revealed that prescriptions for antidepressants were 23% higher among those taking two-hormone contraceptives and 34% higher for women taking progesterone-only pills.
Teens emerged as the most vulnerable group, with 80% of those on the combination variety exhibiting evidence of depressive behavior.
Longer-term, hormone-based birth control means, such as rings, patches, and coils were associated with even greater instances of the mental health issue.
Researchers note their results may actually be underestimations, as people who experience a notable change in mood shortly after starting the birth control tend to cease its use quickly.
