What 'affluenza' teen Ethan Couch's life is like in a Mexican immigration detention center
  • 8 years ago
MEXICO CITY — Ethan Couch, the "affluenza" Texas teen who received only probation for killing four people in 2013 while drunk driving, is being held at an immigration detention facility in Mexico after having been granted a stay of deportation to the United States.

Couch, who faces incarceration in the U.S. for violating the terms of his parole, is staying at the Agujas immigration detention center in Mexico City.

Citing a Mexican immigration official, ABC News reports that Couch, 18, shares a cell with three or four other migrants at the center, where the majority of detainees are from Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador.

Couch gets three meals a day and has unlimited access to public phones and medical care. He also has access to an outside courtyard that has a basketball court and a soccer pitch.

Couch and his mother, Tonya, disappeared early last month after video appeared on social media of him apparently violating the terms of his parole at a party where alcohol was served."

Tonya Couch, who was arrested with her son in the resort town of Puerto Vallarta, is expected to appear in court Tuesday in Los Angeles. She was charged with of hindering apprehension of a felony.

Couch was convicted of four counts of intoxication manslaughter but given 10 years of probation instead of jail in 2013 in a case that attracted worldwide notoriety after Couch's defense team argued that Couch suffered from "affluenza" caused by his wealthy and coddled upbringing, a condition that prevented him from knowing what was right and what was wrong.

Affluenza is not a recognized condition by the American Psychiatric Association, and Couch's diagnosis was widely ridiculed.
