USA: Immigration Detention Centers Criticized

At a high level meeting on immigration policy in Washington DC, the treatment received by 1700 mothers and children currently housed in immigration detention centers came under fire by immigration rights advocates. A spokesperson for the Migration Policy Center denounced the Department of Homeland Security for continuing this policy. He compared the centers with jails, many of which are managed by private contractors that have a profit motive. Immigration reform is sure to be a key issue in next years presidential elections, and Latino voters are paying close attention to the positions being put forward by the candidates.
