Shark bites leg: man killed in Maui shark attack

A man fishing just off the coast of the Hawaiian island of Maui was fatally attacked by a shark on Monday (December 2). Reports say 57 year-old Washington state resident Patrick Briney and a friend used kayaks to fish for bait fish.
Shortly after Mr Briney dipped his foot in the ocean, an unknown type of shark bit off most of the man's lower leg and foot.
The victim called for help from his friend who was fishing some 500 meters away and Briney was rescued by a nearby snorkeling vessel. Mr Briney, however, died from his injuries before he could reach dry land.
The site between the Hawaiian islands of Maui and Molokini where the man was kayak fishing is a popular spot for diving, fishing and snorkeling, but 2013 has seen a spike in shark attacks in the area.
Eight individuals have been attacked off the coast of Maui this year, with two of those attacks resulting in fatalities. Last week, a woman sustained a non-lethal bite but in August, a 20 year-old German tourist died after a shark bit off her arm.
A Hawaiian Department of Land and Natural Resources official told reporters that his department is conducting a two-year study on shark attacks in the Maui area in a bid to discover why they have been on the rise.
During the last two decades, waters around the entire state of Hawaii on average recorded four unprovoked shark attacks per year, but thus far, 2013 has seen 13 such incidents.
