Shark bites woman 'to the bone' in attack off Cocoa Beach in Florida

COCOA BEACH, FLORIDA — Shark attacks on humans usually occur in deep water, but encounters can and do happen in shallow waters as well.
An unidentified 28-year-old female tourist was wading through waist-deep water off Florida's Cocoa Beach near Cape Canaveral at about 3 p.m. on Sunday when, NBC News reports, a shark fin came up out of the water and slapped her across the face.
Unfortunately being rudely slapped by a shark wasn't the only nasty experience this unfortunate tourist endured that afternoon. The creature then bit the woman before swimming away, leaving the tourist with an almost seven-inch gash near her ankle; a wound described as "to the bone."
Hearing the woman's cries for help, several brave beachgoers responded. A woman identified as Holly Petersen reportedly entered the water, grabbed the victim's hand and dragged her back to shore. Paramedics transported the victim to hospital where she is recovering.
This year has seen a slightly above average number of attacks off American beaches, according to experts.
