Five hasidic men were arrested in New York on Wednesday over a brutal December attack on a gay man that was initially investigated as a hate crime.

Taj Patterson, a fashion student, was heading home along Flushing Avenue in Brooklyn when he was approached by a gang of around 20 hasidic jews who accused him of vandalising cars in the area.

Patterson then says the men, at least two of whom were a volunteer patrol known as the shomrim, knocked him to the ground before repeatedly beating and stomping on him while allegedly shouting anti-gay slurs.

The instigator of the attack then kicked him in the head and told him to "stay down" as the others cheered him on.

The attack left Patterson with a broken eye socket, a detached retina, and cuts and bruises to the knee and ankles.

The five suspects were arraigned on Wednesday and released on bail ranging from $50,000 and $25,000. They face up to 25 years in prison if found guilty. More arrests are expected.
