Caught on camera: angry mob kills woman for burning the Koran in Afghanistan

A 27-year-old Afghan woman, named Farkhunda, was accused of burning the Koran killed by a mob near the Shah-e Doh Shamshira shrine and mosque. The killing happened in broad daylight in Kabul on Thursday.

The woman was stomped on by a large crowd of men chanting 'Allah akbar!'. The crowd continued to beat her with sticks and bricks even after she had fallen unconscious. Farkhunda was then set on fire and tossed into the Kabul River.

"I heard a noise, I went and people said that a woman is burning the Koran. When I went closer I saw angry people shouting that they want to kill the woman" an eyewitness told the BBC.

"They beat her to death and then threw her on the river bank and burned her. Firefighters later came and put out the fire and took the body."

However, according to Farkunda's parents, the woman suffered from mental illness for the past 16 years, and did not mean to burn the Koran.

Police have arrested four suspects in connection with the attack.

Although this may be the first incident of its kind in Afghanistan, most violence against women goes unreported, especially in rural areas.
