Afghan woman beaten, dragged and burned after falsely accused of burning Koran

Protests broke out in Afghanistan on Monday over the lynching of a woman who was falsely accused of burning the Koran.

Twenty-eight-year-old Farkhunda had been arguing with a mullah after accusing him of selling false Tawiz, or charms, to women at a shrine. During the argument, Farkhunda was accused of burning the Koran, an accusation that incensed a crowd that began to attack her.

The policeman who saw the events unfold said Farkhunda had denied setting the Koran on fire, the BBC reported.

Farkhunda was beaten with bats, stomped on, driven over, and her body dragged by a car before being set on fire, according to the BBC.

At her funeral, women broke with tradition and carried her basket, a role normally carried out by men, the BBC reported.

"Last night I went through all documents and evidence once again, but I couldn't find any evidence to say Farkhunda burnt the Holy Koran," General Mohammad Zahir told reporters at her funeral on Sunday. "Farkhunda was totally innocent."

At least 24 people have been arrested over the lynching, with authorities expecting to make more arrests. Meanwhile, the BBC reports that 13 policemen have been suspended for having failed to do enough to stop the attack.

Farkhunda's family initially claimed she was mentally ill, but her father has since retracted his statement. He said he was told to say so by police to lower the chances of violent reprisals against them.
