German police said on Thursday that they have foiled a planned terrorist plot by a couple which might have involved bombing an annual cycle race near Frankfurt.

Reuters reports that a man with dual Turkish-German citizenship and his wife, a Turkish national, both with suspected Islamist militant links, were arrested in a town near Frankfurt on Thursday on suspicion of planning a bomb attack.

The suspected target of the attack was a cycle race that takes place in the Frankfurt area on May Day each year, according to CNN. The race was cancelled as a precaution.

German police decided to make the arrest after the man was found to have purchased large amounts of chemicals while using a false name and was also seen near the route of the May Day cycle race, Reuters reported.

Police recovered a pipe bomb, 100 rounds of 9mm ammunition, a gun, the essential parts of a G-3 assault rifle and 3 liters of hydrogen peroxide which can be used to make explosives from the couple’s home, according to CNN.
