Sesame Street's Big Bird could have died in the Challenger disaster. The yellow bird has been played by actor Carroll Spinney, now 81, for 46 years and in a new documentary he's revealed how close he came to being on the doomed Challenger shuttle flight.

In the early 1980s, the Reagan administration was looking for ways to get kids and young people more interested in the US space program. So NASA came up with a big idea — Big Bird would go into space.

The beloved Sesame Street character was saved due to his size. Big Bird's giant yellow suit simply would not fit inside the shuttle, and NASA was forced to scrap the idea.
