Mom kills baby: woman births son in office bathroom then shuts newborn in desk drawer - TomoNews

A Michigan District Court judge charged a woman Friday with felony murder, premeditated murder and first-degree child abuse, according to the Redford Township Police Department.
Kimberly Pappas, 25, stands accused of suffocating her newborn son in a desk drawer after giving birth in an office bathroom.
The Wyandotte woman worked for Ceva Logistics and reportedly hid her pregnancy from her coworkers, according to a Local 4 reporter who attended the court hearing.
Pappas allegedly gave birth on the floor of a bathroom stall at work and cut the umbilical cord with a pair of cuticle scissors.
She then wrapped her newborn baby and placenta in a plastic bag and carried the bag back to her desk, pretending like nothing had happened.
She shut the bag inside her desk drawer and then returned to work.
A co-worker made an emergency phone call after finding blood in the stall where
Kimberly had the baby. When first responders arrived, Pappas reportedly told them she was not feeling well and that the remains of a miscarriage were in her desk drawer.
But the baby was still warm when firefighters opened the drawer, according to Detective Sgt. Kevin Crittenden of the Redford police department. They reportedly tried to resuscitate the baby before taking him to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 11:55 a.m.
In court on Friday, Kimberly’s attorney argued she suffers from mental illness. He also said her parents didn’t know about the pregnancy, and that she was able to hide it with loose-fitting clothes.
“I think she was concerned about what she was going to do with her life,” defense attorney Ray Cassar told Local 4. “The most important thing for this young lady right now is treatment. The last thing she needs is to be in a jail cell.”
Kimberly was denied bail. She will appear in court again on June 8th.
