Missing AirAsia flight QZ8501: Indonesia finds two “large objects” in search of wreckage

An Indonesian navy ship dispatched to locate the wreckage of the AirAsia QZ8501 flight detected two large objects on the floor of the Java Sea on Friday night.

Indonesian officials said an Indonesian navy ship found two large objects using sonar while combing the Java Sea at around 11:40 p.m. Friday.

The two objects are located about 30 metres underwater. The larger object measures 9.4 metres by 4.8 metres by 0.4 metres, while the smaller one measures 7.2 meters by 0.5 metres.

The search team is now operating an ROV to take images of the two objects amid the bad weather.

Singaporean navy ship RSS Supreme also found a piece of the wreckage, which appears to be a window panel, on Friday morning.

30 bodies have been recovered so far, and authorities believe most bodies are still trapped inside the fuselage. Another urgent task is to retrieve the black boxes, which can provide crucial information about the crash. Indonesian authorities are also prepared to send divers to look for the objects.

Only four victims have been identified. Indonesia has also temporarily suspended AirAsia’s license for operating Surabaya-Singapore flights, as the airlines were only permitted to operate flights on four days, but not on Sundays. AirAsia QZ8501 went down last Sunday, and it is suspected the pilot did not request a weather report before the flight.
