U.S. Congress should encourage Japan to address past wrongdoings: adviser

A senior U.S. advisor says the U.S. Congress should encourage Japan to make efforts to heal ties with its neighbors that have worsened due to Tokyo's denials of its wartime history.
President and CEO of the Mansfield Foundation Frank Jannuzi says that, if the issues are not addressed, wounds from the past could threaten important future steps for the U.S.-Japan alliance, including... the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal and the finalization of new alliance defense guidelines.
Jannuzi, who described Japan's wartime sexual enslavement of Korean women as "forced recruitment,"... pointed out that Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has been trying to minimize Tokyo's culpability.
