Despite their dauntingly large size, elephants sometimes land in predicaments that require help from human hands. Recently a juvenile male Asian elephant fell upside down in an irrigation ditch in India.

The creature was left lying on his back inside the tea garden trench with his legs in the air. The elephant was kicking its legs, struggling to get upright, but no matter how hard he tried he was left in the same helpless position.

The Deputy Director of the Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation, Dr. Rathin Burman received a call about the distressed animal and quickly sprang into action.

Burman got in touch with rescue team members and fellow veterinarians. Together, the crew got close to the spot, but their vehicle couldn’t handle the tough terrain so they were forced to run to the calf.

They soon found the elephant was in pain and fighting to get out of the ditch that measured about 5 feet deep by 2 feet wide. Veterinarians injected the elephant with pain relievers before the rescue efforts began.

The group started digging to widen the ditch It took some time, but eventually the hole was large enough for the creature to move onto his side and stand up.

The crew stood back and watched as he regained his balance and walked off into a nearby forest.
