Elephant rescued after gorging on fruit trees then falling into reservoir in Thailand

This is the heart warming moment a stranded elephant struggling to breathe was rescued after falling into a jungle reservoir.

Locals who were harvesting crops heard the animal crying desperately for help in Chachoengsao, Thailand, on Monday morning (July 13).

The jumbo is believed to have been gorging on nearby fruit trees then stumbled into the pit while looking for a drink to wash down the meal.

However, the banks of the pool, used for holding water for agricultural use, were too steep and the elephant was unable to climb out.

The region's Deputy Chief Suriyakamol Waihong arrived at the land and found the jumbo was struggling to survive. He had tried to raise his trunk above the 6ft deep water level to breath.

The wildlife boss hurried to find the nearest available backhoe from the locals to help dig a way out of the hole for the poor jumbo.

Footage shows the frightened jumbo run straight back to the jungle after he scampered up the path that was dug by the locals.

Wildlife boss Suriyakamol said the elephant might have been thirsty after snacking on nearby fruit plants, then fell down the steep banks.

He said: "We have examined the area and found that there were some fruits missing from trees. The elephant's footprints were also nearby.

"We believed he might come to eat the fruit then stopped to drink at the reservoir but slipped and fell into it.''
