Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko signed a decree on Monday to dissolve parliament, paving the way for a new election.

He announced the move on Twitter saying “I have decided to prematurely end the authority of parliament”.

His spokesperson then tweeted that the election would be held on 26 October.

In an address Poroshenko said that the current parliament was used to support former president Yanukovych, and that it was not possible to win the war with it.

He added that “we need to start the cleansing process with the law-making body” and that he was “acting in accordance with the Ukraine Constitution”.
