An Italian man died after he was suckerpunched outside a bodega last Friday in New York.
Oliver D'Orio, 37, had a Swiss passport and was visiting his girlfriend in the Bronx. He went to the Guerrero Bodega on Washington Avenue and East 184th Street around 11:30 p.m. Video from security cameras show him chatting with customers, including 19-year-old Brownie Lopez.
D'Orio was badgering customers, asking them to buy him a beer, according to reports. He walked away from the bodega only to come back with his shirt off and approach Lopez in an intimidating manner.
While D'Orio was looking away, Lopez hit him with an open hand. D'Orio appeared to be knocked unconscious by the blow. He fell backward and smashed his head on the pavement.
The shop owner called 911. Paramedics arrived 30 minutes later, and D'Orio was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Lopez turned himself in to authorities at the 48th Precinct in the Bronx. He was charged with assault, as police believe Lopez did not intend to kill the man.
