This, after demonstrators attempted to break through a police roadblock -- trying to position themselves closer to where European Union Finance Ministers were meeting.
Demonstrations near the venue were banned by police.
This was the scene earlier in the day, but on the other side of the city.
(SOUNDBITE) (Greek) LAID OFF STATE HOUSEKEEPING WORKER, EVANGELIA ALEXAKI, SAYING:
"We are free to walk on the streets and on the sidewalks whenever we want, and for as long as we want. No one can stop us, we are free citizens."
A think-tank study has shown that the economic crisis in Europe has put six million people out of work and driven others into poverty.
The difficult economic situation is precisely what finance ministers were set to examine on Tuesday.
