Egypt: police fire tear gas to disperse demonstrators in Alexandria

Riot police in Alexandria have used police fire tear gas to disperse protesters demonstrating against a new law, which restricts the right to protest.

The unrest in Egypt’s second largest city comes as the country’s political transition has been thrown into further uncertainty.

The interim government – which has been in power since democratically-elected Islamist President Mohamed Mursi was overthrown by the army in July – unveiled a new draft constitution on December 1.

It broadens the army’s power and makes some changes to the roadmap for transition, which was initially announced by the army soon after Mursi’s ouster.
