Police cruiser slams into car, kills six

An investigation into the police car crash that killed six members of the same family on October 18, 2013, revealed that the driver of the other vehicle ran a red light before the cruiser slammed into its side.

Upper Arlington Police Officer Shawn Paynter was responding to a robbery in-progress at the McDonald's restaurant on West Henderson Road. The officer, who was driving alone, sped to the scene of the crime. He was driving at about 86 m.p.h when he approached the intersection of Riverside Drive and Fishinger Road. A 1999 Toyota Corolla came in from the right after running a red light and Paynter applied the brakes.

He was travelling at about 49 m.p.h. when he slammed into the side of the Toyota.

The car had been driven by 39-year-old Eid Badi Shahad and his passengers were his wife, Entisar Hameed, 31, and their four daughters, Shuaa Badi, 16, Amna Badi, 14, Ekbal Badi, 12, and Lina Badi, 2. None of them had been wearing seatbelts and all of them were suffered fatal head and neck injuries. There was also no indication that the driver had been impaired.

Authorities found no grounds for charging Officer Paynter for his role in the accident.

The Badi family members were on their way home from Eid al-Adha celebrations. They were refugees from Iraq who moved to Columbus in 2009. They are survived by five boys, the oldest of which was 16-years-old at the time of the accident.
