Tiger kills 10th person in northern Indian killing spree

When animals attack: A female Bengal tiger on a killing spree is terrorizing villagers in northern India having taken the lives of 10 people in just seven weeks.

The big cat's latest victim, a 50-yo man, was collecting firewood in the forest near his village in Uttarakhand state when the animal attacked, mauling him to death.

Hearing screams, villagers came running and chased the beast off with rocks and shovels. But the tiger had already disemboweled the man and torn off his legs.

In early January it also killed a teenage girl.

Hunters are tracking it, but it has evaded them even avoiding a trap baited with a live calf.

The animal is believed to have escaped from the Jim Corbett National Park, India's oldest national park: an area set aside to provide the species with a safe habitat.

Locals say at first the tigress did not eat its victims, though the more recent attacks suggest the animal has a taste for human flesh.

Rupek De, chief wildlife warden of Uttar Pradesh said hunters hired to kill the animal were having trouble tracking it in dense forests. The team also is understaffed; only three of the six hunters hired for the job showed up for work.
