A protest in Rio de Janeiro’s main train station turned violent on Thursday with riot police using batons and tear gas to disperse the group.

Demonstrators destroyed ticket machines and turnstiles in their rally against a 10 cent rise in public transportation fares, which is expected to come into effect this weekend.

Several people were said to be injured, including one cameraman.
