Illinois gunman kills three adults and two boys

A gunman killed five people including two small boys at their home in Manchester, Illinois, early on Wednesday morning, but left a wounded girl with a neighbour.
The gunman, Rick Odell Smith, was armed with a shotgun, a hunting rifle with a scope and a large hunting knife. Police say he shot a great-grandmother, a young couple and three young children with the shotgun at close range. After the shooting, he carried a 6-year-old girl who survived from the scene to a neighbour's home and asked she be taken to a hospital before fleeing in his car. The neighbour then informed police. Police caught up the gunman several hours later. He died in a shootout with officers.
A motive for the killings has yet to be determined.
