"12 Years a Slave" wins top prize, first Indian-American wins Miss America pageant

"12 Years a Slave," the true story of a free black man sold into slavery in 1840s Louisiana, won the top prize at the Toronto International Film Festival on Sunday (Sept. 16). Toronto's People's Choice award, which in the past has gone to Oscar best picture winners such as "The King's Speech" and "Slumdog Millionaire," and last year went to multiple winner "Silver Linings Playbook," will likely only increase Oscar buzz around the film.

Nina Davuluri won the Miss America pageant during this year's 2014 Miss America competition on ABC, becoming the first Indian-American to wear the crown, which went to Miss New York for the second year in a row. The field was narrowed to Davuluri and Miss California Crystal Lee, the first runner-up. Just before the results were announced, Davuluri said, "We are making history right here as Asian-Americans."
