Egypt military increases security in Suez Canal

The Suez canal in the Sinai Peninsula is a major life line for the oil industry and now, amid uncertainty in Egypt, security has been tightened.

. (SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) HEAD OF SECURITY IN ISMAILIA, GENERAL MOHAMED EID, SAYING:

"There is cooperation and ongoing meetings with the members of the armed forces who secure the canal. We are using all modern equipment and communication equipment as well as trained police dogs. This started recently when we began increasing security measures in the canal."

Fears persist that the turmoil in Egypt could disrupt traffic through the Canal.

(SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) HEAD OF SECURITY IN ISMAILIA, GENERAL MOHAMED EID, SAYING:

"The canal and the bridge are operational but we have increased security measures."

On Saturday the Muslim Brotherhood called for more mass demonstrations in support of ousted President Mohamed Mursi.

They say they will not leave the streets until he is restored to power.
