A woman is lucky to be alive after she encountered an alligator while kayaking in the Everglades.

52-year-old Sarah Boynton was paddling on the water when all of a sudden, her inflatable kayak began sinking. A gator had punctured one of the chambers and came dangerously close to biting off a part of her shoulder.

She was in a remote section of a National Wildlife Refuge when the terrifying incident occurred and adding to the dire situation, she was all alone. The gator latched on to the kayak and began aggressively trying to rip it to shreds.

Boynton called 911 and while on the phone, she hurriedly paddled to the shore, hoping to get there before the alligator sunk its teeth into her. Somehow she made it onto dry land.

She was forced to stand alone among the tall grass until rescuers arrived.

Park managers believe the gator was a mother, who attacked as part of an effort to protect her young.
