28 dead in coal mine accident

A colliery blast on Saturday (May 11) in southwest China's Sichuan Province killed 28, state media reported.

The accident occurred at around 2 p.m. (0600GMT) when 108 miners were working underground, in Taozigou coal mine Luxian county in the city of Luzhou, China's state Xinhua news agency quoted an official statement as saying.

Twenty-seven workers died at the site and one other worker died in hospital.

81 miners were rescued, eight of which are in critical condition, suffering from extensive burns and gas inhalation, China state television CCTV quoted doctors.

An investigation into the accident is underway.

It is the second coal mine accident in 24 hours in the country.
