Afghans protest over Pakistan border dispute
  • 11 years ago
Hundreds of Afghans march through Kandahar after fighting erupts on the Pakistani border.

"Death to Pakistan", they chant, vowing to protect the disputed border area.

Afghan officials said the clashes broke out Monday after Pakistani troops tried to repair a border gate in Nangarhar province that Afghanistan claims encroaches on its territory.

Last week in the same area, an Afghan border policeman was killed in an exchange of fire.

It's not clear which side fired first.

(SOUNDBITE) (Pashto) PROTESTER, AHMADULLAH KHAN SAYING:

"We are here to protest Pakistan's aggression on our soil. We, the people of this country, men and women, want to show Pakistan that we are ready to defend our land at any cost."

Afghanistan has never officially accepted the border between the two countries, which was drawn by Britain in 1893 through ethnic tribal lands.
