Deadly blast hits Turkish military bus

Investigators scour the site of a deadly blast that hit a Turkish military bus on Thursday.

At least one soldier was killed in the explosion, and more than 10 were wounded.

Kurdish militants are suspected of carrying out the attack on the bus as it headed toward a naval base in the west of the country.

A Turkish news agency reported that Kurdistan Workers Party, or PKK rebels detonated explosives on the road, before opening fire on the bus at around 8 am local time.

It said the soldiers returned fire.

Attacks on military vehicles are common in southeastern Turkey, where the PKK have fought a 28-year separatist insurgency, but are rare in western Turkey.

More than 40,000 people have been killed in the conflict since it began in 1984.
