Houses and shops sit damaged in a Turkish town after a mortar round flew across the border from neighbouring Syria.

Debris covered streets in the town of Akcakale from shattered windows and wrecked buildings.

There were no reports of casualties.

SOUNDBITE: UNIDENTIFIED AKCAKALE RESIDENT SAYING (Turkish):

"I wasn't home, thank God. I was out with my family. You see, the house is severely damaged, especially the windows."

It's not the first time Syria's escalating conflict has spilled into Turkey.

Turkish officials have recently reported bullets flying across the border as Syrian rebels battled government troops for control of the crossing.
