Clashes in Chile

ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION)

STORY: Chilean students took to the streets of Santiago Wednesday protesting the high cost of higher education in the country nearly one year after the student protest movement began.

Marching under the banner of "A YEAR OF STRUGGLE STILL NOT HEARD" thousands of students gathered in the center of Santiago to express their displeasure at the government's failure to deliver an adequate response to their demands.

The day's march began peacefully but soon turned violent as police clashed with some protesters who threw rocks in response to police use of water cannons and tear gas to disperse the demonstrators.

The students began protesting in June 2011 about the high cost and poor quality of higher education within Chile and continue to demand that secondary school education in particular improves.
