The only vice-presidential debate of the 2008 U.S. campaign was a polite and largely mistake-free discussion, that failed to produce a clear winner.
But both Joe Biden, the Democrat candidate, and Sarah Palin, his Republican adversary, were at pains to portray themselves as being in touch with so-called average Americans.
