Christian worshippers in the Middle East marked Easter Sunday (April 15) with a procession into the faith's most sacred site in Jerusalem and Sunday mass at an Orthodox church in the Gaza Strip.

Thousands of pilgrims walked towards the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem's Old City for a mass to mark the resurrection of Jesus. The Church is believed to be the site where Jesus was crucified, buried and resurrected.

Local Christians were joined by pilgrims from all over the world in a procession towards the church led by Greek Orthodox Patriarch Theophilos III.

In the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip, a small community of Palestinian Christians convened for mass with prayers and hymns in a local church.

Easter Sunday marks the culmination of Holy Week, which begins with Palm Sunday and commemorates the time worshippers Jesus was resurrected three days after his death by crucifixion.
