Shen Yun Dancers Discuss NTD's Chinese Dance Competition

Contestant registration is now open for NTD Television's 5th International Classical Chinese Dance Competition. NTD's Ben Hedges talked with previous prizewinners from the classical Chinese dance company Shen Yun Performing Arts about their experiences in the competition. NTD is a proud media partner of Shen Yun.

This year NTD Television will hold its 5th Classical Chinese Dance Competition. Since its inception in 2007, the competition has attracted some of the world's most accomplished Chinese dancers, including dancers from Shen Yun Performing Arts, the world's most celebrated Classical Chinese Dance Company. Dancers from Shen Yun have been among some of the top prizewinners at NTD's four previous competitions.
As registration starts for this year's competition, Shen Yun dancers tell what the competition was like for them in past years.
[Tim Wu, 2008, 2010 Gold Winner]:
"It is just a really good experience to share your experiences with other dancers. It was not just a competition but more of a learning experience for me."
[Alison Chen, 2008, 2009 Junior Silver Winner]:
"I expected people to kind of fight for the prize, but actually many of the contestants were actually quite nice and supportive of each other."
This atmosphere of support reflects the spirit of Classical Chinese Dance.
[Tim Wu, 2008, 2010 Gold Winner]:
"It requires the dancer not just to be physically fit, but also mentally and spiritually fit."
And the dancers also have to learn Chinese history to dance well.
[William Li, 2008, 2009 Junior Silver Winner]:
"If you want to do Chinese Classical Dance well, you have to learn Chinese history basically, to be able to dance it well
