Because the living room is such a high traffic area, where everybody in the household is going to be using it, this is an area where items tend to get collected quite frequently. One of those items are "kid clutter". I would recommend that you get storage units to use in your living room, so that you can contain your kids stuff and they can put their stuff away on their own easily. When they need to find it they are not saying "mom, dad, please get this for me", you say, "go over to your cubby and get it on your own".

This way you can keep your living room organized and nice to use for whoever wants to visit. In the living room one of the areas that I like to create is the, entertainment slash, media slash, playing area. This is where items such as your DVDs that you are going to watch, the books that you are going to read and the board games that you are going to play all go into the same space. That way when you are trying to figure out where you put that stuff, you associate it with entertainment, media or playing and that way you will be able to find it a lot easier.
