A big company might cut corners... and if it does, you might get hurt. The antidepressant sertraline hydrochloride—sold under the brand name Zoloft—might have caused you and your baby to suffer life-threatening side effects. If a dangerous product has harmed you or a loved one, the Rottenstein Law Group can help.

While sertraline is relatively safe, there are a number of dangerous, even deadly, Zoloft side effects that users must be aware of. The most common side effects of Zoloft, as revealed through clinical trials, include: Nausea, sexual dysfunction, diarrhea, dizziness, fatigue, headache, weight loss, nervousness, insomnia, and dry mouth.

Other Zoloft side effects that have been reported by users are: anxiety, agitation, panic attacks, irritability, hostility, aggressiveness, impulsivity, psychomotor restlessness, hypomania, and mania.

In 2005, the FDA warned about Zoloft side effects in children and teenagers that could increase their tendency towards what is called suicidality (increased risks in suicidal thinking and behavior). In 2007, the black box warning was extended to young adults (those aged 18 to 24). Although the black box warning does not include adults, the Zoloft medication guide states that adults may also experience “worsening of their depression and/or the emergence of suicidal ideation and behavior.”

Also widely reported are the side effects of Zoloft and alcohol. Generally, concomitant use of alcohol and Zoloft can worsen the drug’s side effects, negatively impact central nervous system function, and intensify the effects of alcohol. And, strangely, some Zoloft users have reported uncontrollable cravings for alcohol while taking the antidepressant.
