Chinese authorities have closed the Tibet region to foreigners. It comes as the ruling Communist Party prepares to mark its 90th anniversary on July 1st.

Typically foreigners need permission to visit Tibet, with many making the trip to the capital Lhasa.

Tibet remains a controversial issue in China, where ethnic Tibetans accuse the Chinese regime of trying to destroy the Tibetan culture. Chinese authorities have tightened security in the area periodically after mass protests in Tibetan regions in 2008.
