Maoist Rebels Bomb Train Track in Eastern India

Maoist rebels have struck again in eastern India...but perhaps not very successfully. The group of communist militants attempted to stop the trains by blowing up a section of track. But authorities say they only blew up a railway pole, and that it hasn't affected transportation.
Maoist rebels in India triggered a blast that blew off a railway track to mark a shutdown in Jharkhand state on Thursday.
A shutdown was observed to protest the arrest of Maoist zonal commander Uday Mahato.
Authorities say the blast hasn't impacted railway traffic and that the situation is peaceful.
[Santosh Kumar Pathak, Deputy Superintendent of Police]:
"Bokaro police had earlier arrested the Maoist zonal commander Uday Mahato, alias Praveen, and some others. Reacting to the arrest, agitated Maoists observed a shutdown, and to mark it, Maoists blew up railway pole number 51/13 at around 2-3am in Gumia town, leading to minor destruction. Railway traffic is not affected."
The Maoist insurgency has gripped nearly one-third of the country in violence.
The guerrilla war, waged mostly from the forests of central and eastern India, now poses the country's biggest internal security threat, according to the nation's prime minister.
Hundreds of people have been killed and injured in the violence, perpetrated by both the rebels as well as security forces in counter operations.
