A Maoist couple turned themselves in to the police in the state of Orissa on Wednesday. They say that they were mistreated by Maoist rebels.

[Mamian Munda, Former Maoist Rebel]: (female, Oriya)
"Once we reached there, instead of giving training, they used to beat us and also molest us, so to protest it we are surrendering."

A police chief says that six Maoists have so far surrendered and many have been arrested.

[Ashish Singh, Superintendent of Police, Kendujhar District in Orissa]: (Male, Hindi)
"Some tribal people have been instigated to join in the activities against the government. To counter their campaign, we have launched different anti-Maoist operations in which many have been arrested. Apart from this, we are properly implementing different government programs of surrender policy, community policy programs."

Thousands have been killed in the Maoist insurgency, which began in the late 1960s.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has described the insurgency as one of the major threats to India's internal security.
