The once entryway into Madrid, Spain, Alcala Gate is now an ornate monument that welcomes visitors to the city.

The granite Neo-classical gate was completed by Francesco Sabatini in 1778 to replace an older Baroque style archway.

Sabatini designed it after classical Roman arches and it has come to represent enlightenment for the city of Madrid.

In 1904 the gate underwent heavy reparations after the Spanish war of independence from French rule.

The arch is decorated with four small boys who each represent a cardinal virtue; moderation, strength, justice and prudence.

The arch now stands in the Plaza de la Independencia, near the popular El Retiro Park, and is a major icon of Madrid.
