The death toll from Sunday's coal mine explosions at a coal mine in Pakistan is rising. Hope is fading that more survivors will be found.
The death toll from Sunday's methane gas explosions at a coalmine in Pakistan's southwestern province of Baluchistan rose to 45 on Monday.
Hopes of finding more survivors are fading, as the badly burned bodies of dead miners were brought to the surface.
More than 50 miners were in the mine when three big explosions, triggered by methane gas, ripped through the caverns.
Authorities say 25 bodies have been retrieved so far.
Officials say the chances of finding the trapped workers alive are very slim because of a fire, which consumed all the oxygen.
The mine, 22 miles from the provincial capital, Quetta, is owned by the state-run Pakistan Mineral Development Corporation, and was leased to a contractor.
The chief inspector of mines in the region says the contractor had been asked to shut down the mine two weeks ago.
They did find excessive amounts of methane gas.
