The Australian editor of an English newspaper in Burma had a bail request refused by a Rangoon court on Thursday.

Ross Dunkley, editor of The Myanmar Times, was arrested at the Rangoon airport on his return from an overseas trip on February 10. He is being held at Burma's notorious Insein prison with hundreds of political inmates.

Fifty-five-year-old Dunkley was initially charged with assaulting a woman, but later the case was withdrawn. He is still charged with breaching visa regulations.
