Optimism returned to the Detroit auto show Monday as US automakers celebrated rising sales and a remarkable recovery after years of painful restructuring and the bankruptcy of General Motors and Chrysler. GM and Ford scored an early win after the Chevy Volt plug-in hybrid and Ford Explorer sport utility vehicle were named the North American Car and Truck of the Year by an association of automotive journalists.
