Hong Kong Mourns Eight Killed in Philippine Hostage-Taking

Hong Kong is in mourning today... three days after a bus of tourists from the island were taken hostage in the Philippines. Eight of the 15 people on board were killed.

Survivors and family members of victims killed in a hostage situation in the Philippines gathered at the Hong Kong International Airport on Wednesday.

Government officials also attended the ceremony and promised the grieving survivors and family members support.

"Hong Kong people will always stand by their side and government will spare no effort to providing whatever assistance they require. We also wish to see victims who are still in the Philippines, Mrs. Leung and her son, come home early and get well."

An investigation has begun into the botched hostage rescue in Manila after the Philippine government admitted its operation was inadequately trained, armed and led.

"But I still believe that a full, comprehensive, thorough and impartial report is the best condolences and the best closure for this whole tragic incident."

Weapons from the raid would be tested to determine responsibility for the deaths, and the Philippine government has promised to keep Hong Kong closely informed.

The incident left eight of the 15 Hong Kong hostages dead. It is still unknown whether the hostages were killed by the gunman or by police during the rescue attempt.

The kidnapper, a disgruntled ex-policeman, was shot dead by police.

The incident is expected to take its toll on the Philippine tourism industry.
