Sri Lankan Court Proceeds with Case of Arrested General

The trial of a former presidential candidate in Sri Lanka moves forward today. General Sarath Fonseka is under arrest for planning a conspiracy against the country’s current president.

Fonseka quit the army to enter the presidential election last month, in which he lost to Mahinda Rajapaksa.

After losing the election, Fonseka accused Rajapaksa of vote rigging, and wanted to challenge the results in court.

The presidential campaign turned bitter and personal, with Fonseka and Rajapaksa trading allegations of corruption and misconduct.
