The United Nations has opened its 8th international conference to review progress in implementing the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. The UN Secretary General called on Iran to restore trust with the international community on the peaceful nature of its nuclear program. Zhang Yajing has the story.

The month-long conference consists of a four-day general debate and closed-door negotiations, that aim to strengthen the international non-proliferation regime. It will also work to improve safety of nuclear materials and facilities.

The UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, cited recent advances in the disarmament agenda, including a new arms reduction treaty between the US and Russia, as "encouraging signs of progress."

On the Iran nuclear issue, the UN chief urged Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to engage with the international community constructively.

Ban Ki-Moon of UN secretary-general says, "With respect to the Iranian nuclear programme, I call on Iran to fully comply with the Security Council resolutions and fully cooperate with the IAEA. I encourage Iran to accept the nuclear fuel supply proposal put forward by the agency. This would be an important confidence building measure."

The conference is meant to produce a final document that will work towards the goal of preventing the spread of nuclear arms, while working towards reducing and eventually eliminating all atomic weapons.
