Carlos Palomino turned pro in 1972. His first big fight was in his 21st bout and was against perennial contender Hedgemon Lewis. That fight ended in a majority decision draw - Palomino's third to date. The only other blemish on his record was a split decision loss to Andy Price in his 12th contest. Three fights later, he stopped John Stracey in the 12th round to win the WBC welterweight title in 1976. Palomino made seven defences of his title over the next 21 months.

Wilfred Benitez was just 15 when he turned pro in 1973. He made boxing history in 1976 when he won his first wolrd title at the age of 17 (and still in school), when he earned a split decision over Antonio Cervantes in his 26th bout. After two defences, Benitez drew with Harold Weston in 1977. Benitez won a further eight non-title fights, including two very close decisions over Bruce Curry. Still only 20 years old, Benitez moved up to challenge for his second world title.
