Deadly 7.5 Magnitude Earthquake Devastates Noto Peninsula in Japan

A 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck the Noto Peninsula in western Japan on Monday, causing widespread damage and loss of life. The death toll had risen to at least 48 people killed. Over 1,000 first responders were deployed to help with search and rescue efforts. There have been over 147 aftershocks of magnitude 1 or higher recorded in the region, including one of 5.6 magnitude, causing additional damage. While a major tsunami warning was issued after the quake, it was later downgraded to a tsunami forecast as only minor sea level changes were expected.
